Bot permissions

The Discord permissions the Farm Sim Game bot needs for each feature and command, role order, channel overrides, and who can use the dashboard and commands.

On this page

Two kinds of permission decide whether something works: what the bot is allowed to do in your server, and what you and your members are allowed to do. This page lists both. When a feature doesn't post, give a role, or rename a channel, the answer is almost always on this page.

How to read this page#

  • Checked by the bot means the bot tests for the permission before it acts. If it's missing, the bot skips the action and usually writes an entry to Bot Error Logs on your dashboard.
  • Needed by Discord means the bot doesn't test for it first, but Discord refuses the action without it. Renaming a channel, for example, always needs Manage Channels.
  • Permissions are worked out per channel. The bot's role can have a permission and still lose it in one channel through a channel override. See Channel overrides.

What the bot asks for when you invite it#

Where you clickPermission asked for
Add Farm Sim Game to your server (on these docs and the website)Manage Server
A greyed-out server on My Communities, or a faded server icon in the dashboard's server railAdministrator

Administrator covers every permission on this page. If you invite with Manage Server only, add the permissions for the features you use to the bot's role in Server Settings → Roles. /setup and /botinfo always need the bot to have Administrator. See Add the bot to your server.

Add Farm Sim Game to your server

Every command#

Before any command runs, the bot checks that both the member and the bot have View Channel and Send Messages in that channel. Then it checks any extra permission the command needs.

What's missingWhat you see (deleted after 10 seconds)
The member's permission"You are missing permission permissions, you need them to use this command."
The bot's permission"Bot is missing permission permissions, bot needs them to use this command."

Permissions by command#

Hidden from is Discord's default for the command: members without that permission don't see it. Bot also needs lists what the bot checks on top of View Channel and Send Messages. Every command except the public ones also needs Command roles.

CommandHidden from members withoutBot also needs
/setupAdministratorAdministrator
/botinfoAdministratorAdministrator
/echo, /sayAdministrator—
/warn, /removewarn, Warn User, Warn Message UserTimeout MembersManage Messages for /removewarn
/mute, /unmute, Mute User, Mute Message UserTimeout MembersManage Roles for /mute and /unmute (and Timeout Members to time out)
/kickKick MembersKick Members

/pruneManage MessagesManage Messages
/invite createSend MessagesCreate Invite
/server new, /server power ...Send Messages— (you also need Manage Server)
/ticketSend MessagesManage Channels to open the ticket

Full options for each one are on Commands.

Role hierarchy#

Discord only lets a bot manage roles that sit below its own highest role, and only act on members whose highest role is below its own. Role order is set by dragging roles in Server Settings → Roles: higher in the list is higher in rank.

Open Server Settings → Roles

Find the bot's role. It's usually named after the bot.

Drag it up

Move it above every role the bot gives out: New Member Roles, reaction roles, welcome role buttons, Invite Levelup Roles, playtime roles, App Approved Roles and mute roles.

Keep it above members you moderate

For /mute, /unmute, /kick and /ban, the bot's highest role must also be above the member's highest role.

If the bot's role is too low, roles aren't given. Depending on the feature you see "Unable to manage roles…" in Bot Error Logs, a reply like "I wasn't able to update that role. The owner of this server has been notified.", or "I can not mute that user: their highest role is the same as or above mine."

Never hand out staff roles

Anyone who can see a reaction role, welcome button or role menu can use it. Only use plain member roles there, never roles with Administrator, Manage Server or Manage Roles.

Channel overrides#

A channel can override what a role is allowed to do. The bot checks its permissions in the channel, so a ❌ on Send Messages in one channel stops it posting there, even if its role has the permission everywhere else. Private channels (ones @everyone can't see) need the bot added explicitly, unless its role has Administrator.

Check a channel's permissions#

Open the channel's settings

Right-click the channel → Edit Channel → Permissions.

Find the bot

Under Roles/Members, look for the bot's role or the bot itself. If it isn't listed and the channel is private, click + and add it.

Check the ticks

Make sure the permissions the feature needs (see the tables above) aren't set to ❌. Set them to ✓, or leave them on / if the bot's role already has them.

Save

Click Save Changes. Check Bot Error Logs on the dashboard after the next event to make sure the error has stopped.

The same applies to whole categories: an override on a category is copied to channels that are synced with it.

Who can manage the dashboard#

The My Community dashboard opens for a Discord server when you are its owner, or have Administrator or Manage Server there. The website checks this every time you open a page. If you lose the permission you see "You do not have Admin permissions for that discord server." and go back to My Communities.

The same rule applies to Game servers and to linking a related Discord server on a support ticket.

Who can use commands#

KindWhoCommands
PublicEveryone who can send messages in the channel/bump, /bumps, every /game ... command, /help, /ping, /playtime
Administrator onlyMembers with Administrator/setup, /echo, /say, /botinfo
Role-gatedAdministrator, or a role you assign in Command rolesEverything else, like /warn, /ban, /prune, /ticket, /apply, /invite, /server, /userinfo

A role-gated command with no roles assigned works for Administrators only. Anyone else gets "You do not have the permission to use that command!", visible only to them. A member needs to see the command (Discord's default permission in the table above) and pass the role check. To show a command to a role that lacks the Discord permission, change it in Server Settings → Integrations → Farm Sim Game.
