Counting channel
Turn a channel into a counting game where members count up one number at a time. The bot deletes wrong numbers and can fix the count for you.
On this page
The counting channel is a simple game for your whole community. Members take turns posting the next number: 1, 2, 3 and so on. The bot keeps track of the count, deletes anything that isn't the right number and teases whoever got it wrong. It's an easy way to keep a quiet server lively.
Before you start#
- Use a channel just for counting, such as
#counting. Every message that isn't the next number is deleted, including normal chat. - If the channel is missing from the list, run
/setupin Discord, choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then reload the page.
Set it up#
For example #counting. Let members send messages there.
It's under Roles & engagement in the sidebar.
Choose it in Counter Channel.
Set Count Auto Correct. to Enabled or Disabled (see below).
Click Update Bot Settings. The first number to post is 1.
Settings explained#
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Counter Channel | The channel where members count. Choose Disabled - Select Channel to Enable to stop the game. | Disabled |
| Count Auto Correct. | When Enabled, the bot posts the right number itself after someone gets it wrong, so the count keeps moving. | Disabled |
The count starts at 0 the first time you save, so the first number is 1. If you later switch to a different Counter Channel, the count carries on from where it was.
How counting works#
- A correct count is a message that is only the next number. If the count is at 41, the next message must be
42. - Anything else is deleted. A wrong number, a number with words, an emoji or a chat message is removed, and the bot replies with a random teasing message that mentions the member, like "who taught you how to count? 🤣". The reply deletes itself after 1 minute.
- The count doesn't reset. After a mistake the next correct number is still the same one.
- Count Auto Correct. With it Enabled, after a mistake the bot also posts "Let me help you out..." (deleted after 1 minute) and then the right number itself. Members carry on from the number after that.
- The bot keeps things moving. If nobody posts the next number within 30 seconds of a correct count, the bot posts it.
- Messages from bots are ignored. The bot doesn't check who's counting, so the same member can post two numbers in a row.
- Message filters run first. A message a filter deletes doesn't count.
Examples#
A member gets it wrong with Count Auto Correct. enabled:
42
Alex posts 44 by mistake. The bot deletes it and replies:
@Alex who taught you how to count? 🤣
Let me help you out...
43
The next member posts 44, and the game goes on.
Troubleshooting#
Nothing happens when people count#
- Check a Counter Channel is selected and you clicked Update Bot Settings.
- Give the bot Send Messages and Manage Messages in that channel. Bot Error Logs on your dashboard's main page shows Bot Counting Messages if they're missing.
The bot deletes every message#
That's how the game works: only the next number stays. Make sure members know what number comes next by reading the last message in the channel.
The bot posted a number on its own#
Either nobody posted the next number for 30 seconds, or Count Auto Correct. fixed a mistake. Carry on from the bot's number.
