Server logs give your staff a running record of what changes on your server. Pick a channel for each kind of event, and the bot posts a short embed every time something happens: a message is deleted or edited, a role is added to a member, a channel is renamed, and more. You can send all logs to one channel or split them up.
Before you start#
- Use staff-only channels. Message logs include the full text of deleted and edited messages.
- Give the bot Manage Messages and Manage Roles as server permissions when you use the Member Updates Log. Without them, every member change also adds an error to your error log.
- If a channel is missing from the dropdowns, run
/setupin Discord, choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then refresh the page.
Set it up#
It's under Moderation in the sidebar.
Each dropdown is one log. Leave a log on Disabled - Select Channel to Enable to turn it off. You can pick the same channel for several logs.
Click Update Bot Settings. Logging starts straight away.
Settings explained#
| Setting | What it logs | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Channel Logs | Channels created, deleted or renamed, and pinned messages changing. | Disabled |
| Emoji and Sticker Logs | Emojis and stickers added, deleted or renamed. | Disabled |
| Ban Logs | Meant for a note each time a member is banned or unbanned. See the note below. | Disabled |
| Member Updates Log | Roles added to or removed from a member, and nickname and username changes. | Disabled |
| Message Updates Log | Deleted messages, edited messages (before and after) and bulk deletes. | Disabled |
| Roles Updates Log | Roles created, deleted or updated. | Disabled |
| Threads Logs | Threads created or deleted. | Disabled |
| Stages Logs | Stage events starting and ending. | Disabled |
The bot currently doesn't receive Discord's ban and unban events, so nothing is posted to the
Ban Logs channel. Bans and unbans made with /ban and /unban are still recorded in your
warn log channel.
What each log posts#
Every entry is an embed in your bot embed color, with the time it happened and an ID in the footer.
Channel Logs#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Channel Created | The new channel, its name and when it was created |
| Channel Deleted | The channel's name |
| Channel Updated | The old and new name. Only name changes are logged. |
| Channel Pin Updated | The channel where a message was pinned or unpinned |
Emoji and Sticker Logs#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Emoji Added / Emoji Deleted | The emoji |
| Emoji Updated | The emoji and its old and new name |
| Sticker Added / Sticker Deleted / Sticker Updated | The sticker's name (old and new for updates) |
Member Updates Log#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Role Added to User | The member and the role they got |
| Role Removed From User | The member and the role they lost |
| User Updated Nickname | The old and new nickname, or that it was set or reset |
| Username Changed | The old and new username |
Each update produces one entry. If several things change at once, only one is logged: a nickname change wins over a username change, which wins over a role change.
Message Updates Log#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Message Deleted | Who wrote it, the channel and the message text |
| Message Updated | Who edited it, a Jump to Message link, and the text before and after |
| N Messages Purged | The channel and up to 10 of the deleted messages, each cut to 40 characters |
Messages from bots aren't logged. Messages deleted by your message filters,
image-only channels and /prune
appear here too, which makes this log a handy record of what the filters removed.
The bot only remembers messages posted since it last restarted. If an older message is deleted, the log shows "Unable to get content" and "Unable to get username" instead. Edits to older messages aren't logged at all, because the bot has no "before" text to show.
Roles Updates Log#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Role Created | The new role and when it was created |
| Role Deleted | The role's name and when it was created |
| Role Updated | The role that changed |
The bot's own Farm Sim Game role is skipped when it's deleted.
Threads Logs#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Thread Created | The thread, its name and when it was created |
| Thread Deleted | The thread's name |
Stages Logs#
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Stage Started | The stage channel and the topic |
| Stage Ended | The stage channel and the topic |
Examples#
A message deleted in your general chat:
An edited message:
A small server is fine with every log in one #server-logs channel. On a busy server, give the
Message Updates Log its own channel so deleted messages don't bury the other changes.
Troubleshooting#
Nothing is being logged#
- Check you picked a channel and clicked Update Bot Settings.
- Make sure the bot can View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in the log channel.
- Look for permission problems in the error log on your dashboard.
My error log fills up with "Guild Member Update Log" errors#
The bot is missing Manage Messages or Manage Roles as a server permission. The member log still posts, but each change adds an error until you give the bot both permissions.
A deleted message shows "Unable to get content"#
The message was posted before the bot last restarted, so the bot never saw its text. See the tip under Message Updates Log.
My ban log channel is empty#
That's expected at the moment. See the note under Settings explained.
