Reaction roles
Let members pick their own roles by reacting to a message with an emoji. The bot adds the reaction for you and gives or removes the role.
On this page
Reaction roles let members choose their own roles. You pick a message, an emoji and a role. The bot adds that emoji as a reaction under the message. When a member clicks the reaction, they get the role. When they click it again to remove their reaction, the role is taken away. They're great for splitting your server into sections: platforms (PC, Xbox, PlayStation), game versions (FS22, FS25) or opt-in ping roles for events.
Before you start#
- The message must already exist. Post it first, for example with the embed builder or
/echo. - You need the message's ID. In Discord, turn on Developer Mode (User Settings > Advanced), then right-click the message and choose Copy Message ID.
- Custom emojis must belong to this server. Emojis from other servers don't work.
- How many reaction roles you can have depends on your supporter tier (see Limits).
- If a channel or role is missing from the lists, run
/setupin Discord, choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then reload the page.
Set it up#
Write something like "React to pick your platform" and list what each emoji means. Copy its message ID.
It's under Roles & engagement in the sidebar.
The Add Reaction Role form opens. If the button is missing, you've reached your tier's limit.
Pick the channel the message is in under Channels, paste the Message ID, enter the Reaction Emoji and choose the Reaction Role.
Click Add Reaction Role. You'll see "It should show up within about a minute." The new row appears under Active Reaction Roles.
Add one reaction role per emoji. Several can use the same message.
Settings explained#
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Channels | The channel the message is in. |
| Message ID | The ID of the message to put the reaction on. It's a long number. |
| Reaction Emoji | One emoji. Use your keyboard's emoji picker for a standard emoji. For a custom emoji from this server, paste its tag, like <:tractor:1154925795194707968>. Use a different emoji for each role on the same message. |
| Reaction Role | The role members get when they react with that emoji. |
Active Reaction Roles#
This table lists every reaction role with its Emoji, Channel and Role. Click the trash button and confirm to delete one. You'll see "It should be removed within about a minute."
When you delete a reaction role, the bot removes that emoji's reaction from the message. Members who already have the role keep it. Remove it in Discord if you need to.
Limits#
| Supporter tier | Reaction roles |
|---|---|
| Free | 10 |
| Bronze | 15 |
| Silver | 25 |
| Gold | 50 |
| Platinum and Diamond | Unlimited |
The page shows how many you've used. See Premium for the tiers.
How it works#
- Syncing. You save reaction roles on the website, and the bot picks them up on its own. It checks for new and deleted reaction roles every few seconds (except during the first minute of each hour), so changes reach Discord within about a minute.
- Adding the reaction. For a new reaction role, the bot finds the message and reacts with your emoji. If the message was deleted, the reaction role is removed from your list.
- Giving the role. When a member adds that reaction, the bot gives them the role. When they remove their reaction, it takes the role away. Reactions from bots are ignored.
Discord only lets the bot manage roles below its own highest role. In Server Settings > Roles, drag the bot's role above every role you use here. Never use a staff or admin role: anyone who can see the message can react.
Examples#
A platform picker with three reaction roles on the same message:
| Reaction Emoji | Reaction Role |
|---|---|
| 💻 | @PC Farmer |
| 🎮 | @Console Farmer |
| 🚜 | @FS25 |
The message you post first:
Pick your platform!
💻 PC
🎮 Xbox / PlayStation
🚜 Playing FS25
React below to get the role. React again to remove it.
About a minute after you save, the bot's 💻 🎮 🚜 reactions appear under it, ready for members to click.
Make an "Events" role, add it as a reaction role, and ping that role for farm events. Only members who want event pings get them.
Troubleshooting#
Problems are written to Bot Error Logs on your dashboard's main page.
The reaction never appears on the message#
- Give the bot Add Reactions in that channel. Bot Error Logs shows New Reaction Role with "Unable to add reactions in server channel." Members can still add the emoji themselves and get the role.
- Check the Message ID is right and the message is in the channel you picked.
- A custom emoji must be from this server.
- Wait about a minute. Changes aren't instant.
Members react but don't get the role#
- Give the bot Manage Roles and move its role above the role. Bot Error Logs shows Reaction Roles with "Unable to manage roles for server."
- If the role was deleted in Discord, delete the reaction role and add it again with a new role.
I can't add another reaction role#
"Your current supporter tier is limited to 10 Reaction Roles." (or your tier's number) means you've reached your limit. Delete one you don't need, or see Premium.
"You did not complete all fields. Please try again." means a channel, message ID, emoji or role is missing.
The reaction is still there after I deleted it#
To clear the reaction, the bot needs Add Reactions and Manage Messages in that channel. If it can't, Bot Error Logs shows Remove Reaction Role with "Unable to remove reactions in server channel." You can always remove the reaction yourself in Discord.
